You have fair skin and you love the sun. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with that, correct? Unfortunately, sun exposure and fair complexion are not the best of friends. When you’re extremely fair or even pale, the door to developing sunburns is wide open in terms of tanning. So tanning on the beach is simply out of the question.

How about using self-tanners then? Are these suitable for fair skin? Only the best self tanners for fair skin are! It’s because only these formulas make sure to not produce an orangey or streaky tone that is often a part of the whole tanning experience for fair skin. In that case, it’s time to indulge a little!

Skinerals Californium Self Tanner

Skinerals Californium Self Tanner

Products like the Skinerals Californium Self Tanner make the task of tanning on the go much easier. And it’s a very reliable self-tanner in my opinion. That’s because it’s not like other bronzers and tanning lotions that create an unnatural orangish tint. Nor does it give rise to skin problems as in the case of using tanning beds too often. Needless to say, Skinerals offers a safer alternative.

It’s a foam, lightweight, quick-drying formula that doesn’t spring into action unwanted results like streaks, unevenness, or an unpleasant odor. Instant bronzing results are what you get instead. It’s got no nuts, oils, parabens, and gluten. Plus, the product is vegan and cruelty-free as well.

You can use it on your face and body without a worry, even if your fair-skinned or pale.

Tanceuticals CC Self Tanning Lotion

Tanceuticals Self Tanner

I, personally, love two things about this Tanceuticals Self Tanning Lotion. The first is that it’s a CC formula, meaning color-correcting. And the second is that it ranks as the best self tanner for fair skin legs, arms, face, and the whole body.

It’s equipped with healthy ingredients such as mango butter, vitamin E, and acai berry. Expect to find no minerals and parabens. Speaking of which, it’s a cruelty-free beauty product.

The formula has the ability to create a natural-looking, smooth sunless tan without an orange color or streaks. This is nothing but great news for men and women with fair skin. You’re also highly likely to fall in love with the refreshing coconut scent.

The blending and absorption capacities of the self-tanner are more than just satisfactory. And the tan lasts for around a week, which is much longer in comparison to most self-tanning lotions. So this should answer the question, how long do self-tanners last?

In all, if you’re fair-skinned, trust me, you might not want to use any other formula once you apply this one. It gives fair skin a very natural golden glow. Plus, no rubbing off on sheets or clothes. And the delicious coconut fragrance just makes it all even better.

Australian Gold Spray Gel Sunscreen

Australian Gold Spray Gel Sunscreen

The first of its kind on the list is the Australian Gold Spray Gel Sunscreen. I know there are many questions popping up in your head about this self-tanner. So let me try to answer all of them.

This is a broad-spectrum and water-resistant sunscreen formula. It contains Australian natural ingredients like tea tree oil and Kakadu plum. Let me tell you that both are packed with plenty of antioxidants for protecting your skin against free radicals.

What about the bronzing action though? Is this spray gel sunscreen capable of activating that? Of course, it is! With the help of caramel, the formulation produces a rich golden tan.

And for moisturizing your skin, there’s olive fruit oil and sunflower seed oil. They deeply moisturize the skin to keep it hydrated and smooth.

Then comes the fragrance bit. The scent is reminiscent of vanilla, orange, and coconuts. It’s like a tropical vacation!

And lastly comes the part where I tell you about how suitable the product is for fair skin, which it really is. No matter how fair you are, the self-tanner doesn’t cause sunburns on the beach. The fact that it’s equipped with broad-spectrum SPF says a lot about how effective it is for a fair complexion.

For results that look nothing but natural, you might want to go for Jergens. The tinted formula here makes way for an even, most natural-looking tan in a very short period. The transformation of color happens very quickly. I’m sure you’re glad to hear this.

What the formulation contains is Advanced Color Complex. It works with the natural tone of your skin to bring about results the same as sun-tanning. And since the self-tanner is tinted, it’s visible at the time of application. And this makes room for an even, precise tan.

The scent is light and fresh. And if you’re fair-skinned, you’ll see that the tanning lotion works like a charm without turning you orange. In my opinion, it’s the best affordable self-tanner you can get your hands on.

So those with fair skin can breathe a sigh of relief because you’re not looking at a self-tanner that makes your skin orange instead of golden.

Josie Maran Argan Liquid Gold Self Tanning Body Oil

Josie Maran Argan Liquid Gold Self Tanning

When argan oil is a part of the mix, you can expect intense nourishment from your self-tanning lotion. The argan oil in here is also fast-absorbing and light enough to create a semi-matte finish.

You’ll also love this Josie Maran Liquid Gold Self Tanning Body Oil for its soothing and hydrating properties. The soothing part is covered by aloe juice that nourishes and revitalizes your skin. And the hydration is brought about by coconut water.

Even the scent of natural apricot and vanilla is quite hard to dismiss. What about the tanning action? This is performed by naturally-derived DHA. It’s what builds that desirable natural-looking, even, and healthy bronzed glow.

Speaking of naturally-derived DHA, please note that the tanning lotion doesn’t contain any artificial fragrances, gluten, phthalates, sulfates, parabens, mineral oils, and the like. It’s also cruelty-free and vegan by the way. All Josie Maran products are!

During the application, this self-tanning mousse looks greenish and gray in color. Now that’s not something to be scared of. The color is just for visibility. So you know how much to apply and where. This ensures an even, precise tan that lasts for a whole week.

You can achieve the perfect bronzed exotic glow without having to expose your skin to the sun. Meaning no sun damage or premature aging to deal with just because you want to tan.

The product is enriched with enticing vanilla extracts. Rest assured this is not your ordinary tanning lotion with a bad odor. It’s got natural ingredients that hydrate and moisturize your skin during and after the tanning process. So whoever said that sunless tanning causes skin damage or any negative reaction has certainly not stumbled upon this mousse.

L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze

You can transform your pale or fair skin simply by using this L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion. It gives you a natural-looking, luminous bronzed tan instantly. And why wouldn’t it when the formula contains light-reflecting micro-sized particles that illuminate the skin!

What the self-tanner is also equipped with is Vitamin E. It’s a very powerful antioxidant much-needed during the tanning process.

On top of that, the lotion is quick-drying. It has the ability to give you a sun-kissed, radiant look that is also streak-free. And you’ll love the refreshing summer scent as well.

Once the light hits in, the tanning lotion produces a gorgeous shimmer and the perfect natural-looking tan. Even in the case of fair skin, you get no orange color.

Banana Boat Self-Tanning Lotion

Banana Boat Self-Tanning Lotion

When I think of Banana Boat, what immediately comes to mind is golden-brown tan. This self-tanning lotion dries up only in a few minutes and doesn’t streak either. But what makes it so likable is the self-adjusting color formulation. It allows you to control the tan shade. Not many self-tanning lotions give you that wonderful opportunity.

Banana Boat has included skin-nourishing and soothing stuff like Vitamin E and aloe vera in this. The sunscreen formula is made without using any amount of octinoxate and oxybenzone. Meaning your skin is in safe hands.

Not only is the self-tanner quick-drying but it’s also oil-free. But it’s the sunless bronzing action that you’re highly likely to buy Banana Boat for. The stuff blends very well with fair skin. Only a golden tan is what you get, no orange color. Despite being extremely fair or pale!

Famous Dave’s Tanner Fair Skin Face Self Tanner

Famous Dave’s Tanner Fair Skin Face Self Tanner

No doubt, this is the best self tanner for fair skin face. So if your complexion is on the lighter side of the spectrum, you’re bound to enjoy your sunless tanning experience with this one. It has the power to deepen and even out skin tone.

Rich emollients coming from jojoba, sesame, and aloe vera take care of the nourishment and moisturizing part. Moreover, the self-tanner is fragrance-free, which means good for sensitive skin too.

Now let me bring something very important to your attention here. The majority of self-tanning formulas on the current market are packed with mineral oils, stearic acid, and/or triethanolamine. And these ingredients are harmful because they have a high pH value, over 6. With a higher value, the skin is more likely to turn orange.

Keeping that in mind, the Famous Dave’s Tanner has no such ingredients. So a natural-looking golden tan is what you get.

Fake Bake Fair Lotion

This is Fake Bake’s second self-tanning lotion I’m reviewing in this article. So you know what brand to pick if you’re looking to tan fair skin. This one is much the same as the Fair Gradual Self Tan Lotion discussed earlier.

The formula glides on easily and offers a tint effect so you can see where it goes. Both the former and latter make the application much easier, which is great for first-time tanners.

Much like the previous Fake Bake creation, this one too consists of naturally-derived tanning agents called erythrulose and DHA. What these do is allow your melanin cells to produce the tan in the most natural, gentle, and safe manner.

For darker results, you have to re-apply the tanning lotion on consecutive days. This gives you complete control over the development of your tan.

But what works here is the fact that the Fake Bake Fair Lotion is specially formulated for lighter skin tones. So you can tan with confidence and without worrying about the results looking orange in color.

Hempz Touch of Summer Daily Moisturizer

Hempz Touch of Summer

What about this daily moisturizer makes it so suitable for self-tanning? The fact that this is a subtle self-tanning lotion that enhances your skin’s natural shade. And also the fact that the formula contains the organic version of hemp seed oil.

Hemp seed oil conditions and hydrates your skin while also delivering nourishment. The thing that makes the self-tanner safer is the use of zero gluten, parabens, and THC drug. And the thing that makes the tanning experience more enjoyable is the inclusion of exotic berries.

The subtle sun-kissed glow you get with this tanning lotion is something that keeps you coming back for more. No orange color tints, no greasy feeling, no unpleasant odor, and no streaks even. If you ask me, it’s the perfect solution to tanning pale/fair skin and also sensitive skin.

Why Self-Tanning is Better Than Sun-Tanning for Fair Skin?

Best Self Tanners for Fair Skin

When you have fair or pale skin, it’s not as simple as spreading out on a blanket at the beach. Because if you do that, the results certainly are not going to be in your favor. Instead of a gorgeous sun-kissed glow, you’re forced to deal with skin redness and peeling. And sometimes even sunburns and more paleness.

Whatever your skin tone though, tanning by exposing your skin to UV light from the sun or UV radiation from the tanning bed is not a safe option. So if you care about this, then what works here are the best self-tanners.

Sun damage welcomes premature aging and even skin cancer. It’s important to make sure that your enthusiasm and passion for tanning does not interfere with the long-term health of your skin. Am I right? In that case, you should consider sunless tanning for a change. Particularly if your skin complexion is light, fair, or pale.

But Are Self-Tanners Bad for You?

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) present in self-tanners is a safer alternative to skin-damaging UVB and UVA rays. However, you have to keep a few safety factors in mind. What DHA does is increase your skin’s capacity to develop sun damage. This means going out in the sun post-tanning is not such a great idea unless you apply your sunscreen diligently.

You can go for self-tanning formulas that contain naturally-derived DHA. I have shortlisted many of these myself. You’ll find them in the reviews section of the post.

As for those with sensitive skin, you might want to do a patch test before applying the new self-tanning lotion all over your face and/or body. Self-tanners, after all, are cosmetic products. And the thing about certain cosmetics is that they trigger allergies. So it’s better to be safe now than sorry later.

How to Choose the Best Self Tanners for Fair Skin

What you see below are special factors crucial to keep in mind if you have fair or pale skin. The thing about sunless tanners is that most of these products are specifically designed for light skin tones. Women with fair or pale complexion are the ones that usually go for self-tanners. They’re the target audience for self-tanning lotion manufacturers.

So here’s what you need to know about self-tanners for fair skin…

Color Level

It goes without saying that not all self-tanners help you get the same specific tan color. Those with pale or fair skin wish to go very dark so they can make the most of that drastic change. But it’s always easier said than done as the process of darkening or bronzing the tan means also inviting the orange effect.

In that case, you should choose a self-tanner that offers a subtle sun-kissed glow or a light color. And if you want darker results, feel free to re-apply the same stuff after a while.

Skin Sensitivity

Not all sensitive skin is fair or pale. But all fair or pale skin is sensitive, unfortunately. So you have every reason to be skeptical about the ingredients in the formulation of the self-tanning lotion. You have to make it a point to stay away from skin-irritating elements like artificial fragrances.

What you can do is shortlist self-tanners that claim they’re suitable for sensitive skin. More often than not, these claims are true if the brand is a part of my reviews list.

Type of Self-Tanner

By type of self-tanner, I mean the form of the formula. The most common form of self-tanner is a self-tanning moisturizer. It creates a subtle, light shade that builds gradually over time. These moisturizers are great for women with fair skin.

The next option good for light skin tones is tanning towelettes. These you wipe on for creating a light sun-kissed glow. Tanning towelettes are perfect for on-the-go tanning instead of regular applications.

Then come self-tanning creams and lotions, which produce a more concentrated tan. Now, these may or may not work for fair skin. As for tanning mousse, gels, and oils, you can apply them on your pale complexion if you’re not new to the process of tanning. It requires a certain level of experience to be able to use them to your advantage.

And lastly, there are self-tanning sprays. Even though ideal for fair skin, sprays are not easy to work with since they demand assistance in terms of application.

How Long Does a Sunless Tan Take to Develop? And How Long Does It Last?

The answer to the first question is based on the self-tanner brand. Generally speaking, once you apply the formula on your skin, you’ll see results in around 3 hours.

As for how long a fake tan lasts, the answer is 4-5 days. The color starts to fade after that. In that case, for a darker or longer-lasting tan, you have to keep re-applying the self-tanner. And this you can do once you notice the color fading (preferably on the fourth day).

What About Tanning Towelettes? How Long Does the Tan with Tanning Towelettes Last?

Much like regular self-tanning lotions, tanning towelettes tan stays for 4-5 days. Each towel you can use just for a single application though. This means you use and throw it after every application. And one towelette has the capacity to cover the whole body. So it’s not such a terrible product, but it’s certainly not eco-friendly.

Why Does Tanning Fair Skin Make It Look Orange?

Back in the days, sunless tanning meant making your peace with looking orange. But that’s not the case anymore. At least not with the self-tanners for fair skin I have reviewed in this post. And that’s because these formulas are color-corrected with a little bit of green for preventing the orange effect.

Also, ingredients in self-tanning formulas with a pH level higher than 6 tend to make the skin and tan look orange. These ingredients usually include mineral oils, stearic acid, and triethanolamine. So it’s best for you to choose a self-tanner free of such substances. This means your skin is much more likely to look naturally bronzed and skin-kissed instead of orange.

How to Apply Self-Tanner Properly

The instructions are simple to follow. Once you get it right the first time, you’ll find that the steps are quite effortless to take.

  • Begin by exfoliating your skin. It’s important that you get rid of dead skin cells to ensure a well-distributed, smooth tan. But please use a mild exfoliant and don’t forget to include your ankles, knees, and elbows as well.
  • Let your skin dry before applying the self-tanner. Otherwise, the formula becomes runny, thus creating streaks that last for days.
  • Now it’s time to apply the self-tanner. Keep complete coverage in mind at this point. So apply the lotion in small, manageable sections. Like one leg, one arm, etc. Make sure to massage it in a circular motion. This helps in achieving an even tan.
  • Blend in the self-tanner when working your ankles and wrists. For a more natural-looking color in these areas, lightly extend the tanning lotion. You can even dilute the formula over your joints or whichever places you know your skin is thin and absorbs the self-tanner more quickly.
  • As for how long to keep the tanning lotion on your body and face, 10 minutes is a decent amount of time. But for a darker tan, 30 minutes is more appropriate.
  • Once you wash off the self-tanner from your skin, avoid exercising, wearing tight clothes, or stepping out in the sun. This you do to prevent sweating because sweating paves the way for streaking your tan finish.

Final Words

Getting that perfect golden tan does not have to be a pipe dream for those with fair skin. Not as long as there are good self-tanners at your disposal.

The majority of self-tanning products are actually made for fair or pale skin. You just have to make sure you pick a formula that gives you a light tan while also not triggering skin sensitivities or making your skin turn orange. And for darker results, you can always re-apply.

Sunless tanning, in comparison to sun-tanning, is definitely a safer alternative. So why not make the most of it when you want to transform the look of your fair skin!
